Our Origins
Costa’s origins trace back to the late 19th century, and with the establishing of its own cast‑iron foundry and modeling shops in the early 20th century, it allowed the company to design, craft, and build virtually anything the engineering of the time could support. What began as a small, resourceful family enterprise laid the technical foundation for the modern Costa brand.
The Costa Foundry
Before our modern forming technologies transformed manufacturing, the leading edge of metalworking was casting. In those early years, Costa operated its own foundries and pattern-making shop, designing and producing cast components necessary to manufacture machinery.
This experience laid the foundation for the entrepreneurial spirit, technical knowledge, and engineering approach that continue to drive our company today.
Hydro-Turbines
The production of hydro turbines marked an important chapter in Costa’s history. At a time when hydro power was driving industrial development, Costa leveraged its foundry operations, modeling shop expertise, and engineering knowledge to manufacture turbine components for power generation. These projects demanded advanced technical and human skills and a commitment to quality, further expanding the company’s manufacturing capabilities.
Machinery Manufacturing
The production of woodworking machinery marked a significant step in Costa’s industrial development. Drawing on decades of experience in foundry operations, mechanical engineering, and machine building, Costa began manufacturing woodworking machinery in 1921. The company developed equipment for sawmilling, planing, parquet production, and wood processing, helping manufacturers improve productivity and product quality. Over the following decades, Costa continued to innovate and, in 1956, introduced its first wide belt sander—an achievement that would pave the way for the company’s future leadership in sanding and surface-finishing technology. This evolution from general woodworking machinery to specialized sanding solutions reflects a long tradition of engineering, manufacturing excellence, and continuous innovation.
